The United Way of Defiance County hosted the first annual Defiance Hot Air Balloon Festival at the Defiance County Airport on August 16th, 2014 to benefit the new volunteer and community engagement program, the Community Engagement Center.
The Community Engagement Center (CEC) was launched in summer 2014 as a program through United Way of Defiance County to engage Defiance County in service by connecting individuals to local volunteer opportunities. The Defiance Hot Air Balloon Festival is our annual fundraiser for this program.
Our goal is to inspire individuals to volunteer, build new relationships and strengthen the community. We have created an online network as a tool for connecting the Defiance County community to service opportunities at local agencies and organizations. In less than a year, the CEC mobilized and made connections resulting in volunteer hours at an estimated value of almost $15,000 invested in our community. In the second year, this number increased to $20,712.40, representing 198 registered volunteers and 35 agencies. The CEC also serves as a tool for the community to view information about the local agencies and their events. In 2015, there were over 3,540 views of the volunteer and in-kind donation needs.
• Enables our community needs, including volunteer needs, in-kind needs and special events to be easily advertised.
• Allows members of our community to browse what needs exist and then register to be automatically notified when volunteer opportunities arise around their passions.
